Nicky Maynard or Jay Emmanuel-Thomas perhaps? I do feel we need a decent striker up there as Sam Jones appears to be a flop (contrary to my own expectations).

It was the great Scottish striker, A Trialist who has scored many goals over the years.

Scottish football Conference standard at best.

Indeed, I am sure Rapid Vienna, rosenburg, Villareal, spartak Moscow, Red Bull and Leipzig. Will take comfort from your observations

Neither played regularly in the Premier League.

What about Gabby Agbonlahor - still without a club since his release from Villa.

Gabby would make a lot of sense given the Villa connection with the chairman, just cannot imagine he would drop down to league 2 level.

Wasn't that the Grimsby player that Troy Brown brought down inside our area in the play-off final...?

Just a long-running Nest joke like pork scrathings, transfer news early next week, and McCoulskey’s goal scoring record since signing.

Didn't we try and sign Paterson when he left Stoke?

Genuinely facsinated by the identity of Mr Trialist.

Yeah pretty sure we bid £100k for Paterson when he was at Stoke he came down and looked at the training ground but Scunthorpe offered better wages and Ward played the little old Cheltenham card.

If it is Paterson I thought I would look up his playing record. Scores a goal about every four games, but in fairness to him that has been at a higher level than League 2. But one word kept leaping out every season, "injury". So given the wages he would likely command, is it like all signings, a risk,or a big risk ?

Shola Ameobi was seen buying a packet of Spave Invaders from the 50p garage on Monday.

Lol Paterson was paper / agent talk. Wasn’t it Downing who said wanted him? Same situation as Hooper.

Another name into the mix (without any evidence whatsoever), Leroy Lita.

I'm fairly sure Parkin never played regularly in the Premier League, so we can rest easy.

In fact, he has never played in the EPL. (source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jon_Parki ... statistics" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;). Which is a huge relief.

There simply cannot be that many free agents who have played regularly in the EPL and Championship. I'd go with Martin Paterson.

Just trawling "TransferMarkt" (which is admitedly by no means authoritative), and ruling out the outrageous, and assuming the player is English or Irish, I reckon its one of four:
Gabby Agbonlahor, Martin Paterson, Darren Bent or Leroy Lita

I'd imagine the first two are the most likely given location and connections, but I'd be surprised if Agbonlahor would consider dropping to L2, unless he is desperate for a club and been turned down elsewhere.

Lita signed for Margate earlier this month

What about Leon Best or Dexter Blackstock?

Most likely a non-leaguer or higher club cast-off, so an unknown face even if spotted.

"played regularly in the Premier League and Championship"...I think someone with a bit of knowledge should be able to spot who it is.

One would have thought so.......
No whispers on the grapevine or rumours on the rumour mill, Robin, or others that purport to having the inside track on this kind of thing?

He played at Stoke in the Premiership I am almost certain.

As for Paterson we bid £100,000 I thought and he came down and Wardie showed him around, this was around the time Odejayi was sold.

It's interesting that JP hasn't named him at all. Request from Duffo possibly?

Unlikely to be Lambert as he has retired from football, and as is the case with agbonlahar if it were either of them then UP would have said ex International (Or would that have given too many clues?)

I wondered that, Nesty. Former international would give the game away or at least narrow the field down even further and to about two (Darren Bent being the other one)
