Players often don't peak in terms of fitness and stamina until the new year, so they could have tired muscles as 120 mins will be a shock to the system and recovery time is crucial.

So why do they train all day in the pre season build up ?

To be fit enough for the start of the season and to last through the season, and they get fitter as it goes on, as long as recovery and training is managed correctly.

I'm not just making this up for the sake of it - just regurgitating what managers and players say throughout the season.
