Upto the end of last season, Chelt were ranked 61st out of the 72 Footy League clubs - and 15th in League 2!! Attendances have also fallen 5% since Season 2008/09 (although we were in League 1 at the time).
Puts the current situation into a clearer perspective I think.

That although we've had a poor start to the season, from the last 2 seasons we have been punching well above our weight in L2 - if you link attendances and league position directly to each other.
Cheltenham's ranking out of 92 League clubs
2008-9 78th (3rd division)
2009-10 81st
2010-11 81st
2011-12 81st
2012-13 81st.
I have long suspected we are the 81st best supported side in the country!!

So this year the fifth year. In the previous four two have been lower and two have been greater. So this is an average (median) year for us. So why all the moaning and panicking?
Attendance has nothing to do with league position.CheltRobin wrote:That although we've had a poor start to the season, from the last 2 seasons we have been punching well above our weight in L2 - if you link attendances and league position directly to each other.

Our attendances so far this season have been swelled by a large number of away fans. We need to look solely at our home attendances, and these are dropping.

But away fans are forced to pay the highest price at our ground, so financially very important.

The 5% drop is also from 2011-12 to 2012-13, not over the 5 year period. The five year drop is almost 20%, but that would be mostly down to decreased away fans from Leagues 1 to 2.

But 11-12 was a rise on the previous year...swings and roundabouts.

@ctfcshire - Attendance can certainly affect league position - bigger crowds = more money thru the gates = more money to spend on players + wages. Obviously, it also depends on what financial state your club is in. That is why Chelt have been able to bat above their attendance levels in L2 - our club is run very well.
