Conference contenders: more signings

As it stands I feel Grimsby are the team to beat, I am not convinced by Eastleigh or FGR, perhaps that's just my perception of the clubs and ignorance of them having the two largest budgets but it's how I feel. Of the others I expect ourselves plus Tranmere and Wrexham to challenge however I feel the bookies have been blinded by Tranmere's crowds over their ability to win the league (Grimsby far more likely in my view).

Grimsby are looking very strong, impressed with their signings. I remember Marcus Marshall ripping us apart on a few occasions in his Rotherham days.
Have Tranmere actually done anything to deserve the favourites tag, or is literally down to the size of their stadium and they were L1 just over a year ago? They were so rubbish last season that we did the double over them and finished above them. Even more work to do there than GJ, an experienced and succesful manager at nearly any level, has to do here.

Short on funds Tranmere may be, but doing more than we are to invest in the modernisation and business develop of old stands:

The robins nest looks a million times better now it's been refurbished, hopefully bit by bit the rest of the main stand can be upgraded as and when we get the funds.RegencyCheltenhamSpa wrote:Short on funds Tranmere may be, but doing more than we are to invest in the modernisation and business develop of old stands:

I think the hospitality areas had a makeover a couple of years ago and the changing facilities are a good size since the extension.

I remember Stockport having 2 successive relegations and struggled in the Conference. Tranmere will be this seasons Bristol Rovers and everybody will expect them to walk the league.Shade wrote:Have Tranmere actually done anything to deserve the favourites tag, or is literally down to the size of their stadium and they were L1 just over a year ago? Codheads sign 25-year-old Cambridge CB. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/33333743" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Just the type of player we need.

Eastleigh owner Stewart Donald purchases 10% stake in Oxford United

Looks like they have cash to burn!

When you see someone like this pumping money into dead end clubs like Easleigh who are already playing above their natural level in the conference and Oxford who are severly hamstrung by their ground situation it's incredibly frustrating that nobody is willing to invest here given the potential we have.

Tranmere have signed Andy Mangan. Very good signing at this level.

In my opinion this is a similar situation to Andy Pilley at Fleetwood whereby an avid supporter of one team buys a local non league club, puts significant investment in and that club rises.RegencyCheltenhamSpa wrote:Eastleigh owner Stewart Donald purchases 10% stake in Oxford United

This is fine and great for raising the profile and dreams of the 'lesser' club but I'd always question what emotional pull would the club have such as Oxford for Donald (or Blackpool for Pilley) if an opportunity presented itself to takeover or become heavily involved at their boyhood club?
It's why despite on one hand I'd love to see a sugar daddy pumping money into Cheltenham, on the flip side I'm more than happy with the set up we have now. I've been critical of the board on occasions but actually when I take a step back away from the emotion of a poor season, and when you speak to the people involved at our club, I can see they are true supporters of our club.
I'm not sure the are too many clubs at our level or FL where you will find the chairman sweeping and helping to tidy up the ground on a wet Sunday morning in late June.
Agree totally.London Exile wrote:In my opinion this is a similar situation to Andy Pilley at Fleetwood whereby an avid supporter of one team buys a local non league club, puts significant investment in and that club rises.RegencyCheltenhamSpa wrote:Eastleigh owner Stewart Donald purchases 10% stake in Oxford United

Gatesehead have Rene Howe on trial, now there's a player who went downhill rapidly! I am sure some on here will say "would be a good signing" but does have 4 goals in 2 seasons from only 49 appearances!

James Gray was a good signing for Wrexham. I can see him being one of the top scorers in the division.

Does anyone else think we're a bit short of fire power? We currently have Danny Wright, Amari Morgan-Smith and Bobbie Dale as strikers. Obviously a centre back and second keeper are the priority but I can't help but feel we need another striker.
Here's how our promotion rivals compare:
Grimsby: Padraig Amond, Omar Bogle, Jon-Paul Pittman and Nathan Arnold.
Tranmere: Andy Mangan, James Norwood, Cole Stockton, Liam Davies.
Wrexham: James Gray, Adriano Moke, Kayden Jackson, Connor Jennings.
Eastleigh: Yemi Odubade, James Constable, Jack Midson, Ross Lafayette.
Forest Green: Aaron O'Connor, Delano Sam-Yorke, Jon Parkin.

Harry Williams is a natural goalscorer and should be included in our list.
I reckon we'll see something happen in terms of a really good signing in the week or so leading up to the season when squads start really taking shape and some options for other clubs realise they aren't going to get anything anywhere else.
Either on loan or permanent.

Grimsby won 2-1 against a strong Derby team today. Impressive result even if it is just pre-season.
