According to this report, we should hear about next seasons format on Friday

Oddly, the report's count of 1 for scrapping the competition altogether, four for retaining the format of 2016-7, and five for going back to 48 teams in straight knock out only adds up to 10 out of 38 votes. I think there is a fourth option, allowing the academy teams to make up to 64 and playing straight knock out

I suspect, that due to the income received last season, Cheltenham may have voted in favour of retaining the group format

Have to agree with the last paragraph. If we can bag £30k every season from the competition that is wages for a young player.

I think the authorities got lucky last season with Coventry getting to the final. Sky Blues taking 40,000 to Wembley and celebrating wildly made the tournament look a success. Had the final been an academy side vs Morecambe in front of 10,000 it would have been panned.

The Checkatrade trophy is one competition too many for me and I don't bother going

You make a good point about the final RCS but most of the other games are poorly attended. I wonder whether
some clubs cover the cost of putting the game on.
