Given the chat on here about whether we are underachieving and how we can challenge with a modest budget, this article about Wycombe published today is interesting.

Note Ainsworth talking about five years of building the squad to go from relegation battle to promotion battle.

They have no academy or reserve team and Ainsworth once bought nets on eBay for training. Mix of loans, kids and experience.

I think it is about getting a core of experience there for a few years and try to improve the kids and loans signed each year.

the problem faced by teams with a modest budget and fan base is that you have to be realistic with the length of contract you offer players. It would be nice to think we would have the likes of Pell. Winchester, Boyle, Forster etc etc for long enough to find the rest pf the pieces of the jigsaw.

Indeed Nesty. And risky of course as if one of the signings on a longer deal turns into a Richards or Taylor you are lumbered.

Spot on. Pretty much what John Ward did here.

If you get it right you sell some of the youngsters on to fund the next batch.
