Interesting read; GJ's target must be finish in the top ten. Preferably within the play-off positions; anything less should be regarded as total failure.
Discuss.....

Interesting read that although on "average crowds of barely 3000" has only really been true the last few seasons of relegation struggle. We've averaged over 4000 before and I am sure would again with some success on and off the pitch.

I dont think weve averaged 4,000 for 10 years Robin. In fact per population we last season had only 2.6% of the town turn up to support, and to think of all the home league games weve played in league 2 only on 28 occasions have we broken a 4,000 attendance, and thats mainly thanks to bristol rovers, oxford, exeter, yeovil. By the way FGR are the best supported club taking in their population, 46.2 % attend their games

Can't dispute any of that Shev, I guess my view is we know that those crowds are possible if we can get success right on and off the field. I look at Lincoln as an example and think there is no reason could not get similar crowds here. If we look at the last ten years success has been very thin on the ground for us with one very notable exception, although potentially the Wembley season under Yates could also be concerned success as it was a very good season but I felt at the time we didn't do enough off the field. Lincoln have done both perfectly and gone from smaller crowds than ourselves to crowds that could see them compete at the top end of league one.

On the crowd as % of local population, this is always an interesting one. I believe the only fair metric would crowd as a percentage of populace within say a ten mile radius of the ground. For example FGR catchment area is realistically the Stroud valleys and not just the village they play in, like wise for ourselves Tewkesbury and Gloucester should be included in the catchment in my opinion.

Apologies if it isn't, but other than a slight update to include last season, I'm pretty sure it's just the exact write-up from last season, including the bit at the end about this possibly being GJ's last season in charge.

It’s a very interesting stat that over 46% of the Nailsworth locality and nearby, turn up to watch FGR, compared to our somewhat miserable 2.6% per head of Cheltenham’s population.

One suspects another reason for the disparity could be that there is very little else to do in that part of South Gloucestershire, whereas Cheltenham Town FC is competing against all manner of alternative entertainment on our doorstep.

Perhaps we need to do more to obtain enhanced partnerships with local entertainment outlets offering special deals for customers who will frequent both the town entertainment outlet(s) and CTFC - for example a big discount for, say, a Gym membership if taken with a discounted CTFC set of tickets - in other words, something that would benefit both clubs (or entertainment outlets).

I daresay the stat is deceiving - given that we have fans from other areas of Gloucestershire (I live in Tewkesbury for example) it's unlikely that of the 2,500-3,000 that FGR get through the gate all of them come from Nailsworth.

As with anything, and just like it has at Cheltenham, the novelty of League football will wear off at FGR and another season of struggle will see their attendances drop to the point they were before they became a well backed non-league team.

Let’s not forget that FGR are the de facto local club for younger football fans in Gloucester now as well. I suspect more home fans at TNL travel from Gloucester than come up the hill from Nailsworth.

And I suspect that some of Vince’s anti-Cheltenham lies and smear is just an act to please Gloucester-based supporters who are his biggest potential fanbase.
