A girl in my office just asked me why Champions League group stage fixtures are played team 1, team 2, team 3, team 3, team 2, team 1 instead of 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3. Being a man, I naturally bullshitted that that's just the way they decided to do it when they invented the competition, but does anyone know if there's an actual reason?

I don’t know but would like to know.

Current system seems a bit unfair: say Messi is injured for a month or suspended for two games before the third and fourth games, then one team plays Barca twice without Messi and the others twice with him.
