I am not entirely convinced the report is genuine. A referee was killed about six weeks ago after being punched.

I wonder which criminal cartel did for the ref. Be interesting to see if there is a Mayoral or Police Chief election soon, as these type of incidents in Brazilian football are usually the result of the criminals supporting one candidate sending a message to those who support the other.

Cartel? Pretty sure the ref stabbing the player to death first was all that led to him being massacred.

Yes, and I was wondering why the Ref did that and was suggesting there was sufficient money/extortion/threats at stake that because the player wouldn't walk he had to stab him.

Usually becomes clear when things like this happen in South American football when one group all get arrested and sentenced and another gets off scot free depending who has control of the police.

Was a good documentary a couple of years back - may have been Luis Theroux - when he was in South America at a game where there was a mass brawl with gunshots etc, I think some died, can't remember but a lot injured. He was speaking to the head of the municipal police during the game, who was explaining that the group behind the goal were part of an organised crime group who the police had had no success in dealing with.

So they recruited other hooligans to do it for them by injuring and killing them, and the group that kicked off the fighting and shooting was the group the police had paid to take out the gang.

Once the mayor and police chief change then it's back to square one and the protected/controlling gangs may switch so it's a constant war on the terraces - and in this case on the pitch as well.

I didn't even think it was much of a foul. At worst, a yellow card. A red card, being stabbed to death and causing a riot in which the ref was beheaded was a maybe a little harsh.

Wonder if they appealed the decision...?
