Wonder how lower league attendances will be effected.
Sky Sports were baning on about how attendances have gone up in the PL, ignoring the fact that pretty much across the football league, attendances have dropped.RegencyCheltenhamSpa wrote:Wonder how lower league attendances will be effected.
Sky Sports and the Premiership continue to suck out the life of any other football league.

I was thinking there might be a young lad, in Plymouth say, who won't want to come with his Dad to Cheltenham as he wants to go to his mates house to watch Swansea vs Man Utd in the early evening game on Sky Sports.
Moyes first game in charge and all that - Sky certainly made sure they chose a game people will want to be home for.
It is a sentiment not borne out by the facts. Although by saying "any other football league", you could be referring to the Malaysian and Scottish Leagues (for example) which seem to have declined in the Sky era.Joey wrote:Sky Sports were baning on about how attendances have gone up in the PL, ignoring the fact that pretty much across the football league, attendances have dropped.RegencyCheltenhamSpa wrote:Wonder how lower league attendances will be effected.

Over a one year period, it is true that attendances in the three Football League divisions dropped, while Premier gained. While the Premier was up on 2011-12, it was down slightly on 2007-8 (the best average attendance in the Premier League epoch). Both Championship and League-2 while being down on the year on year, were up on 2007-8 showing that the Premier League alone is not responsible for falling attendances in other divisions.
The rest of the football league does quite well out of Sky. The 92 club professional structure is maintained by Sky money, and I do not believe we could have maintained the national fully professional fourth division without it. Remember this is the only national, fully professional fourth division in the world, (and I am talking all sports, not just football). Since the start of the Premier League, top division attendances are up 70%, Championship by 64%, League-2 by 31%. (third tier is only up by a fraction of a perent, having had a bad 2012-13, but generally the figures are about 17% up). The average attendance for the 92 has risen by 41% in this period.
However you want to spin this, Sky is partly responsible for the improvement in the lower divisions, as well as the top level - and all this is with admission prices going up faster than the inflation rate.
For the record, the highest ever top flight attendance figures were recorded in 1948-9, part of a four year period when the attendances were better than the recent peaks. The last time the 92 club average was over 16000 was in 1959-60, while the low figure for the 92 was in 85-6 at 8130

I consider it to be worthwhile, it is cheaper than going down the pub every time you want to watch a televised game.Shade wrote:Only if you're paying the full price for all the channelstaxidave wrote:Virgin have just added BT Sports free of charge.

I don't subscribe to BT Sport...
I don't subscribe to any TV channel and as a matter of principle I refuse to give any money to Rupert Mordoch.
OK I will get BT Sport for free with BT Broadband, but I am not bothered. If I want to watch something then I'll find it on t'inter. I have done OK over the last few seasons.

The Premier League are have some success, I believe, in getting ISPs to block sites who illegally stream their games. No doubt other leagues will probably follow. After all it is theft
Other leagues wont need to as the entire IP is being blocked not just access to the premier league games - eg. VM have recently blocked access to firstrowsports - therefore anything streamed on their is not accessible now through VM.RTT wrote:The Premier League are have some success, I believe, in getting ISPs to block sites who illegally stream their games. If that continues to happen then the Football League wont need the expense of getting the court orders as it will all be blocked already.
