With Cheltenham playing away I know all at TNL will extend a welcome to any who are not travelling to match to come to TNL where FGR entertains a very special guests at match with Mansfield - Maisie Sly.

You may have heard the astonishing recent story how The Silent Child, which stars deaf 6 year old Maisie, won the Oscar for best Short Action Film 2018. Maisie, now 6 years old, was just 4 when cast in her leading role as Libby, a deaf daughter of a hearing family. She had no previous acting experience.

In real life, Maisie is profoundly deaf (from birth) and communicates using British Sign Language (BSL). Her two sisters are also deaf as are her parents.

The film co-starred and was written by actress Rachel Shelton and Directed by her fiancee Chris Overton. It was inspired by Rachel’s experiences with her father who is deaf. Rachel learned BSL when she was 12 and signed her acceptance speech at the Oscars ceremony so Maisie (who was in the hall) could understand every word spoken. There are lots of links to the film on the internet, one being: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-43282172

Tomorrow, Maisie will be a mascot and take part in the pre-match warm up. Her father Gilson will be with her. Gilson is the Youth Participation Leader for Gloucestershire Deaf Association (GDA) the charity a FGR supporter is proud to chair. In that role, he goes out into the community to support deaf families and young deaf people. For example, deaf school or college students who need support and confidence to interact with their peers and have opportunities that hearing people take for granted.

Hopefully one or two of you can come to game and give the youngster a round of applause. Thanks

A couple of interesting books about FGR written by the fan involved with the GDA. All profitable from book sales go to the charity.

Meant to say, on Good Friday on R4 (Today) they had someone from the film talking about the story and Maisie.
