Given it seems there are a fair few cricket fans on the forum, I thought it would be a good idea to have a thread for The Ashes, and other forthcoming England games, so that the non-cricket lovers can avoid it and won't keep on coming in and moaning about how rubbish/boring/pointless/poofy it is. That's the plan anyway, but I suspect one or two might still...
Anyway, I'll start with a joke: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cricket/22982588" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Mickey Arthur thinks the Aussies have the best bowling attack in international cricket.

I read that article and wondered what planet he's on. Okay, so he's hardly going to say they're rubbish - but to suggest something that can't be backed up in any way with any statistics or facts isn't going to make them feel good: even Aussies aren't that arrogant!
Look at Jimmy Anderson's bowling figures in yesterday's game: 8-1-14-2 - the guy's almost unplayable in typical 'English' conditions.

I'm hopingnthis is good for England, but knowing our luck someone will come in and turn them into world beaters in a matter of weeks.

I'm going to Day One of the Chester-le-Street Test. Nice day off work to see either a couple of English Centurions or ten Aussies wickets fall. I don't mind which.
I guess I'll know where my money is going by 1pm then. Like I have any doubts England will barbecue the Aussies.Chief BBC sports writer Tom Fordyce at Trent Bridge wrote: To give you an idea of how important these opening sessions are to the overall narrative of the series, here's the lunchtime score on the first day of last five Ashes series compared to the eventual winner: 2010/11: Eng 86-2 (Eng win series); 2009: Eng 93-3 (Eng win); 2006/7: Aus 109-1 (Aus win); 2005: Aus 97-5 (Eng win); 2002/3: Aus 125-1 (Aus win).
98-2, then.
Former England opener Geoffrey Boycott, BBC Test Match Special:
"I think the Australians will feel they've been lucky to get two wickets the way they've bowled."
Could do with Trotty or KP sticking around until the end of the day and completing their hundred in the morning.

Hope to see our boys back in to consolidate and extend the lead not long after lunch tomorrow.
From the jaws of a 99 run lead, the little Aussie git has given them a 14 run lead at lunch.
How many times over the last year or so have a number 10 or 11 scored heavily against England? Tino Best got 95 not out last year, NZ got God knows how many in a 9th wicket partnership as well...

At last. 19 year old Agar falls 2 runs short of a century on his debut. But, on the bright side for the kid, he has just got the highest ever Test match score for a number 11 batsman at his first attempt! Somehow Oz lead by 65...
This. This is why I love test cricket. Who'd have thought this match would still be going on after the end of the fourth day and could still quite easily be won by either team, after the clatter of wickets that fell on the first day. A tense and, at times, thoroughly bad-tempered first test.

Jimmy must bowl after lunch. Can't afford any more tennis ball overs from Finn.asl wrote:The lunch break won't help the Aussies. [/hopeful]
