Tomorrow [Wednesday] several companies are offering a seven and a half per cent reduction in their prices in a campaign to reduce catering vat to 5%. the organisations are listed here; www.vatclubjaquesborel.co.uk/supporters. nice to have a protest movement where you can join in by sitting down having a pint or a meal.

Don't you just hate it when these things are rammed down your throat. :)

I saw the spoons near the office advertising this, stating how it will be used to show the benefits of lower VAT in the hospitality industry. Thing is, a one day sale will attract a bumper crowd, but it be wrong to say that's how busy it would be every day if VAT was cut.

I think a better option would be to enforce minimum off-licence prices, so that supermarkets and corner shops cannot undercut pubs so much.

That is a very selfish attitude, it may be ok for the likes of you who are in regular employment and receiving a good salary but there are many who are unemployed, in low paid jobs or on state pensions who rely on supermarket prices to obtain their alcohol.
Perhaps you would be better off aiming your anger at the big companies that own many of the pubs and restrict the licensees to purchasing expensive beer solely from them, if this tie was lifted I am sure the price at the pump would be greatly reduced.
Good pubs will always survive, it is the poor landlords who are the problem in many establishments.

Yes, Dave - I have and always will be very outspoken against Enterprise Inns who I hate with a passion and they should not be allowed to do what they do, and I do agree with you about good pubs and bad landlords.

My selfish answer to your first point though would be to drink less.

On the topic of pubs - what do people think of this?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/0/24144271

I think it's crock of s***t.

It's all right having one or two pubs with food, but we do not need anymore.
