To be fair I don't think Mal cares about trade or deals. Medicine, energy, space, research, etc irrelevant to him. Could it be that the ROI are finally waking up to the reality that the only real loser from UK leaving EU, is themselves? I presume they want NI as a soft bridge to Europe, very little to do with the small amount of cross boarder trade. It's the UK trade they are trying to work their way into via NI
