Having a monarchy degrades democracy within the UK and an unequal society. There is no statistic showing how much they themselves bring in, the idea of whether or not we keep them due to money is worrying. However I find it hard to believe people fly halfway around the world in an attempt to see a the royal family. Tourists will still travel here to see the castles, palaces and other such things.Shade wrote:Why should they be removed? My only gripe with the monarchy is how much of my tax money pays for all the extended family to have free or very cheap country mansions, chauffeurs and all sorts of other luxuries.
Plus the Queen and Prince of Wales are the two biggest recipients of EU Common Agriculturtal Policy subsidies in the UK.
Strivers not skivers?

Maybe because having an unelected head of state is undemocratic, and that having a head of state who is also head of the church is a confliction for what is supposed to be a secular rule of government.Shade wrote:Why should they be removed? As for the charitable work, if your lavish and privileged lifestyle is funded by tax-payers, then some regular charity work is the bare minimum anyone should be expected to do.
Though not exclusively about royals and charity work, this documentary provides a decent bit of balance to any discussion on the monarchy:

I'm bitterly jealous of a family who get to live a life of luxury because of their bloodline.Shade wrote:Yawn. Bitter and jealous people.
Privatise parts of the NHS, Royal Mail and other public services but we must must keep the royal family because they let us wave plastic flags every time somebody gets married.
