Ok not much going on, so who were the best former Robins who were actually born in Cheltenham or in the surrounding villages ?

I can't go back more than 50 years but for starters I will go with :-

Mark Buckland (and probably the closest born to Whaddon Road too !)
Dave Lewis
Roger Thorndale

Let's be 'avin yours then ?

Championship striker Matt Smith the most successful I would say.

And never on the Robins' books but born in Cheltenham and spending first seven years of his life in Cheltenham: Eric Dier.

What about Peter Goring (Bishops Cleeve birthplace)? FA Cup winner, and along with Cotterill, one of a few (possibly only two) to be born in Cheltenham and played in the top flight.

Mark Buckland played in the top flight Artemis. Colin Bouton played for Derby but not for Cheltenham Town.

in the long lost past it was common for loads of our players to come from the town or nearby, since the 1980's onwards it has been far too rare an occurrence, we'd all love to see "one of our own" in the team on a regular basis.

Others from the town or villages I can think of include John Murphy, Steve Scarrott, Mike Townsend, Sean Whelan, plus loads from the Stroud Valleys like Dave Dangerfield, Pat Casey, John Evans, Terry Paterson - cor blimey that brings back some great memories ....

Anyway my original question is who where the best ? Depends on what level you are looking at really I suppose. For me Mark Buckland would be up there. He would have been an absolute star in Stevie Cotts teams if he had been born 10 years later.

I'd have to say Buckland playing top flight for Wolves as well.
