Tranmere and Kidderminster. One would assume Macclesfield, Halifax and Wrexham as well.
We played them in the FA CUp when we were a league club that was why I asked the question on whether it was a league game or whether cups counted by maybe I misunderstood the orginal question.Fuller wrote:We haven’t played Sutton as a league club. I take it that the question refers to clubs we have played both as a FL club and a NL club and fixtures between those clubs in those circumstances. Hence we have not played Sutton as a FL club when both teams were in the FL. We played Sutton a few times in the Gola League/Conference days.
Dont think these have been mentioned
Barrow
Morecambe
Halifax Town
Newport County played them twice before they went bust and the games were expunged from the records
Gillingham during the 1940s
We have played the following as a non league club then later played them as a league club
Brighton & Hove Albion FA Cup in 1930s and 1970s
Blackpool FA Cup 1930s
Bournemouth FA Cup 1990s
Hull City FA Cup 1940s
Watford FA Cup 1930s
Cardiff City Welsh Cup 1930s

Watford also in the FA Cup 1968. I was there at the PRE and could hardly see over the barrier
We played Watford in the League Cup in our first season in the FL home and away.
Can add Peterborough - FA Cup 1996. Good day out that, all of 25 years ago!

Did we ever play Watford in a non-league game? It doesn’t count if they were a league side when we played them. Same for Blackpool, Bournemouth, Peterborough, Hull, Cardiff and Brighton.
The question is asking for teams we have played in a league fixture and also in a non-league fixture.

Of the teams you mention - Watford, Bournemouth, Brighton and Cardiff were all elected to the Football League before we joined the Southern League in 1935, so definitely didn't play them in non-league.
As we played in the Southern League until 1985, you can rule out Blackpool and Hull for obvious reasons.
From what I can see, Peterborough were a Midland League team so we definitely wouldn't have played them either.

That's how I understood the original question, but it did go off piste a few times, hence the reason I added comments about Carlisle, Peterborough & Watford.RegencyCheltenhamSpa wrote: The question is asking for teams we have played in a league fixture and also in a non-league fixture.
Also worth noting that Wimbledon, Stevenage and Newport were all clubs that reformed/renamed after we played them in NL days, but I like to think they are the same clubs really.
Luton and Dover to add to the "off-piste" list.
(although I read the original question as including the "off-piste" group, I get the intent is "clubs we have played whilst we and the opponents both had the same league or non-league status". Apologies for the pedantry)

The best way to approach this is to make a list of all clubs to have played league football since 1999 and also non league at some point in their history and then look at whether we ever played them pre 1999. For example, we must surely have played Salford at some point in our non-league history.
No sorry, we never played Salford in our non-league days.DWx3 wrote:The best way to approach this is to make a list of all clubs to have played league football since 1999 and also non league at some point in their history and then look at whether we ever played them pre 1999. Here is the list of our football league opponents (there are 85 of them). Others can sort out those who we have played as non-league opponents.DWx3 wrote:The best way to approach this is to make a list of all clubs to have played league football since 1999 and also non league at some point in their history and then look at whether we ever played them pre 1999. Interesting looking down that list and seeing who has gone on to better things, which are still floating around the same L1/L2 level, and which have fallen away or disappeared completely in the last 22-odd years. I think Boston, Bury, Chester, Darlington, Halifax, Hereford, Macclesfield, Rushden and Stockport (not sure about that one, did they go bust or just fall a long way?) have all gone out of business in that time.

And one who went on to win the Premier League….the complete opposite of going bust. Both extremes!Shade wrote:Interesting looking down that list and seeing who has gone on to better things, which are still floating around the same L1/L2 level, and which have fallen away or disappeared completely in the last 22-odd years.
