On this day in 2008 we beat Leeds Utd 2-1 at Elland Rd.
The team included three experienced loans from championship club Bristol City, Brooker, Russell and Keogh. They weren’t the only ones who came in during the window. We obviously had more money to splash back then?

If I remember rightly, Brooker had been out for ages with a knee injury and we were helping build his fitness (bit like with Glen Rea last season), so we probably weren't paying anywhere near his full wage. Keogh was young, so wouldn't have been on a huge amount back then. And Alex Russell, I think he was either also coming back from injury or just sat around scratching his arse so we probably weren't paying anything like his full wage either.
Played 49 games for 8 clubs outside of Ireland/Northern Ireland, including 7 games at a Portuguese third tier club, and didn't score a single goal for any of them. I wonder what ever made him think he was better than our bench.
Well whatever they were on, Downing did a brilliant bit of business getting the trio through the WR door and helping to keep us in League One.Shade wrote: ↑11 Mar 2024, 18:18 If I remember rightly, Brooker had been out for ages with a knee injury and we were helping build his fitness (bit like with Glen Rea last season), so we probably weren't paying anywhere near his full wage. So sad it all went t@ts just up a few months later.
It was different transfer rules then. Keogh, Brooker and Russell were emergency one month loans (initially). Keogh came in on the day of the Leeds game for example. Keogh and Russell stayed until the end of the season
It's not so much the club having more money, it was more that clubs didn't have to take the players for half a season at a time.

Ok then. All I’m saying is those City loans were a trillion times better than most of this season’s garbage.Si Robin wrote: ↑11 Mar 2024, 20:05 It was different transfer rules then. Thinking back to that game it’s amazing how much football has changed.
Young defenders on loan these come as tall lean suntanned ball players, not like Keogh who looked like a weather beaten 40 year old when we signed him.
I don’t think there’s space for players like Alex Russell in the EFL these days…no pace, no strength, no pressing. The fact Bird did his running for him says it all.
Similar for Brooker. More of the Alsop,
Danny Wright and Parkin mould than the modern striker.

I think Brooker and Russell would both be in my all time favourite CTFC 11. But maybe I'm a bit biased because 07/08 was my first season watching Town
Still remember Brooker's late winner against Bristol Rovers, we all went absolutely mental in the PRE !
