Time for the two and a half seasons temporary stop gap of playing Long at CB to end, surely.
If we don’t have a suitable CB then play four at the back.
He can make good contributions in other positions and is a valuable versatile player, but not a CB.
Part of me wishes we lost that game at Cambridge in Feb 2021 5-0 as that probably would have meant Duff didn’t persist with playing Long out of position.

Accrington are not a great side but we’re making them look far better than they are. Dan N should have a storming second half, use up some of the energy he saved in the first half!
Although, after saying that, I don’t think our game plan really works for our strikers. By the time they get a sniff of the ball the opponents defenders are back and covering.

Move Ferry in to midfield and Williams on for Long and go 442 I thinkRegencyCheltenhamSpa wrote: ↑17 Sep 2022, 14:49Wade et al have to get into them and shake them up. Maybe replace a couple.
Time to punish Accrington for missing chances.
We seem to have a squad of too many unfit / injured players
I know I hate "square pegs" but I would replace Long with Lloyd and play Brown (if fit) or Norton up front
We need some muscle in midfield where we can hardly string one pass together let alone two.

Mark Halliwell nailed it on comms - they’re playing 4-1-4-1, with the holding player nullifying Broom and their 4 in midfield breaking so quickly that Perry and Sercombe are overwhelmed and Lloyd and Ferry are caught high up the field exposing the lack of pace at the back. Combined with a high press, we can’t get out, and resort to going long (which we’re losing right now). Need a change of shape, ideas and personnel.

Just about everything about this game was awful. Performance. Individual decision making. Ref. Accrington. The whole game.
The only good thing is that we have only lost 1-0.

I thought after last week’s second half performance that there was a little bit of light at the end of the tunnel and thought we would take that into this week’s game. How wrong I was.
It’s not as if Accrington are a better side than Cambridge. Why can’t we start a game with the same enthusiasm as we finish? Add to that, a referee who seems to have close relatives in Accrington and it’s made for a dull afternoon for Cheltenham fans.

No league game next week. Extra training needed.
The worrying thing for me is I dont see any style of play of any coaching Wade has passed onto the style of play. At least with Duff we had an identity it was sometimes limited but you knew what you were going to get.
Must admit we are very dull to watch at the moment. Surely time Wade tries four at the back and a new system?

I noticed that too. Elliott and Milton got to the halfway line and turned back towards the main stand. I wasn’t impressed.

It might just be Wade’s style. Some managers do it and some don’t. Don’t really see why it’s an issue to get worked up by it.
And there may be other reasons. He might want the players to have the moment to themselves. He might be running in to turn get recovery drinks in place and turn the bath taps on etc etc.
