Gutted. At the end of the day we were a Williamson, Mead and Kirby short. And let's remember they got to the final without 2, if not 3, of the best players in the country.

Bronze had other options than running into three Spaniards. One of them was a simple square ball to an unmarked Toone. She was angry at herself.

It wasn't to be our day. Hemp's shot against the bar early on. James fantastic effort that their keeper just fingertipped over the bar. The number of times there was a tackle or a block and it went back to a Spaniard or stopped short of going out for an England ball was insane. Their striker not being sent off when on another day she could easily have had 3 yellows. The amount of timewasting they got away with without bookings. Spain were the better team but they had luck by the bucketful today. Yank ref was fairly pitiful.

She was never going to pass to Toone there - it’s completely clear she was shouting and pointing/ gesturing to Toone to make the run, which is why she held on to it too long and lost the ball.

A mistake and in hindsight a simple ball to Toone may have been safer, but can’t begrudge Bronze for wanting to have made a pass after Toone broke the lines, as that would have been the only time we broke the lines in that half. Maybe Bronze is too used to playing with the Barcelona players and expected Toone to make a run like the Spanish do.

Speaking of Barcelona and Spanish style and your comments on luck, unpunished fouls, getting away without bookings, time wasting, pitiful referee; that’s how the men’s Barcelona and Spain won their international trophies from 2008-2012 so the women have learned from the best (ie worst).

Can’t expect their striker to have been dismissed for three yellow-card worthy offences when Busquets got away with five or six every match he played!

Edit: below is one the moments where Bronze was waving/pointing Toone forward whilst dribbling and trying to hold on to it to waiting for Toone’s run. We would have had a 3 on 3 pretty much, and probably our best opening of the half, so can’t blame Bronze for wanting to find an opportunity to get us past their midfield three the one time they were out of position.

Think how many times we moan when our players just play simple sideways balls rather than finding space and being a bit braver to break the line. Draw players to you and play it forward into the space left behind is, to give it due credit, a staple and strength of Barcelona/ Spain/ Guardiola football and that’s what Bronze wanted to do. Like in the men’s games, it’s that little bit extra England never have compared to the final/semi-final winners we lose to.

We paid the price for a poor first half. Whenever we had the ball in defence, there were at least two red shirts closing down, instantly; conversely, when they had the ball in defence, our players were nowhere within 30 yards. We got better in the second half but still failed to carve out a single decent chance - James shot into the roof when she had nothing else on and pulled a decent save from the keeper being pretty much it.

Nowhere near good enough on the day, but everything seemed to run for Spain as well which didn't help. You can be bad, still get the rub of the green and get something out of the game but England had no luck yesterday. But with an ignorant comment like your previous one, I don't know why I'm bothering to say, really.
