Must be hard for him to take knowing that was going on under his nose all that time, knowing he could have done something if he'd been less trusting and been more suspicious. Not sure what safeguarding there was in the 80's and 90's but I'm guessing it was basically zero and nobody really thought about a grown man sexually abusing boys and nobody complaining directly.
It's an odd one. If he knew - or even just suspected - and turned a blind eye, well sod stripping him of his MBE, he should be prosecuted.
However, if he was merely guilty of naivety and was unaware of what was going on in the lower echelons of the club...maybe this and his own sense of guilt is punishment enough. As Shade says, there was no such position as 'Safeguarding Officer' back then.
