Sorry, I'm starting to think that I may have been informed about the West Ham home game before, on here. I genuinely have no recollection of it at all nor why I would have missed it. That said, if it was a mid-week league cup game, it's possible I had another engagement (although I did go to the Upton Park match...)

I might be misremembering, but there was a League Cup tie around that time that was originally drawn for West Ham to be home (at the London Stadium), but the ground wasn't available because of an event (athletics?), so the tie was switched to Whaddon Road.asl wrote: ↑04 Nov 2024, 13:00 Sorry, I'm starting to think that I may have been informed about the West Ham home game before, on here. I'd completely forgotten about that game but, now it's mentioned, I remember being there and then watching the recording back after as I believe it was live on Sky. Not very memorable I guess because of the competition and it was early in the season.

It felt wierd, almost like a pre-season friendly. It was warm and light until half time and atmosphere was subdued. It would have been a very different occasion in January, that’s for sure.
We played well overall but Jon Flatt in goal was a bit of a disaster I think it was the league cup. Attendance was low because it was the league cup in fairness, I'm sure in the FA Cup it would have sold out easilly.asl wrote: ↑04 Nov 2024, 13:00 Sorry, I'm starting to think that I may have been informed about the West Ham home game before, on here. Part of me wonders whether if Wimbledon went out in round one, the TV companies would show a repeated of one of their past cup games rather than a different live game, lest a year goes buy without Kingstonian’s stolen ground featuring on our screeens.

Nor did they "steal" it.
Kingstonian were in dire financial straits, thanks to the greed of their owners the Khoslas, so were happy first to rent the ground out to AFC Wimbledon.
Then after a season as tenants, AFCW undertook to buy the leasehold of the ground, with the Khoslas quite happy (and the fans desperate?) to sell it to them.
While AFCW's owners, the Dons Trust, had themselves to launch a share issue to finance the purchase, which was closed the following summer. The club subsequently arranged for a commercial loan to clear the remaining debt to the Khoslas, who had sold it to them for £2.5m:

While upon selling up to Chelsea in order to move to their new Plough Lane ground, AFCW voluntarily made a £1m payment to K's, which they were not legally obliged to do.
Yet some K's fans blithely ignore this, as they pile into AFCW to blame them for their (K's) problems. Which, of course, ignores the indisputable fact that they were a financial basket-case long before* AFCW arrived on the scene, and arguably have been even more so in the 8(?) years since.
(Another factor in their troubles for which K's cannot be blamed is that the local council, Royal Borough of Kingston-upon-Thames, isn't interested in helping them - or any other football club - relocate in the Borough, not least due to opposition from wealthy/snobby local NIMBY's)
* - Remember, K's only moved into Kingsmeadow in 1989, after they had been forced by massive debts to sell their previous Richmond Road ground, their original home since 1902.

My old boss grew up in an estate near RR so was a K’a fan by birth. He always told me a dodgy owner took over to sell the land for his own gain.Wellwisher wrote: ↑08 Nov 2024, 19:02Nor did they "steal" it.

I remember a memorable trip to Kingsmeadow in 1990.
We were playing Kingstonian in the FA Trophy quarter final when Andy Gray was playing for us. We were 1-3 down and we got it back to 3-3 and a replay at Whaddon Road. Sadly we lost that and never saw Andy again.
It was a great day out and there must have been 500 of us down there.
