Big game or not?

Going to the Valley felt like going to “a proper football match” or a big cup game.

Playing them at home doesn’t seem to have the same glamour.

Be interesting to see how the crowd compares to our home games against Ipswich, Sunderland and Sheffield Wednesday who I would class as the other “big names”.

Should be a sell out in away end (only 200 tickets left a few days ago)
Shame if we don't get a decent home turn out. We strive to get into league 1 to play this calibre of club, compared to playing Barrow and Harrogate in league 2

They lost 2-1 to Crewe tonight.

2500 difference between the crowds on boxing day and last Saturday, but I'm not sure how many Plymouth brought. I'm guessing around 1000 more than Burton. So, be nice if 1200 or so Cheltenham fans didn't turn up on Saturday because they can only afford one game this month and decided they would rather see us v Charlton.

No bigger than any other, 3 points to gain. That's it.

Charlton have never really been a draw for the fair weather fan, not historic enough.

Whilst I agree that you're probably right - their stint in the Premier League was too long ago to matter - we've only played them at Whaddon Road once so I'm not entirely sure how you can determine whether they're a draw to our fairweather fans or not.

in the pre season press they would have been one of the BIG teams as they where in the prem, for a bit, biggish ground in south London, it would ne on the radar.

For those in their 30s who grew up on 1990s/2000s Premier League Charlton are a big name. Right from that epic playoff win to battling the big four in the season when they came seventh Charlton were always one of those mid-table Premier League clubs who are some people’s second team. Alan Curbishley and all that.

Scott Parker, Chris Powell, Matt Holland, Hermann Hreidarsson…some of my favourite players from that formative era (and thus of all time), and same for many of my friends.

That era was also peak Fergie and peak ‘anyone but United’ imo. For those desperate for Arsenal/Chelsea/Liverpool to finish above Man U, then away at the Valley was always one of the few games where hopes of dropped points for United were high. And I imagine vice versa. Same as peak Bolton during the same period.

But that all said, it doesn’t feel that big a game and I won’t be making it - hence my OP.

Curbs performed miracles, there. Never understood why he efectively retired as a manager after leaving there. He never took another job, despite being linked with many, did he?

He managed West Ham for two years.

There was an article a year or two back where he confirms that after West Ham he decided to take a break. Whilst he was linked to a lot of jobs, he didn't want anything. Then when he was ready, he was almost like a forgotten man and he ended up coaching at Fulham and elsewhere.

They really aren't a big club anymore, are they. Fancy Charlton celebrating an injury time equaliser at Cheltenham like they just won the FA Cup, when in reality they could and probably should have lost the match 3-0.

Perhaps they appreciate the precariousness of their and our league position more than some of our fans. When you are in a relegation scrap, an injury time equaliser away from home against a direct rival is a big point.

Same old story - replica of last weeks performance. If your don't take your chances in this league, you get punished. Game should have been won in the first half.

Love to know where you were sat, because they were all I could hear for the majority of the first half and a lot of the second.

I think the question is more how the hell did their defender manage to scoop it up and over the bar from a yard out when it came to him that quickly. I couldn't see what happened at the time but it's quite clear on the highlights.
