So there’s a handy tool on Spotify called “episode transcript” which lets you read text of the discussion, so I can speed read it through in 15 minutes, although some of the words get really jumbled up, you get the gist

We won't have the second lowest wage bill in this league, that was more the case in league one. In this league you basically have Accrington and Morecambe with much smaller budgets than everyone else then a group of clubs with fairly similar budgets of which we are a part of, then you havee the bankrolled clubs (which we may be part of next season with a little luck). Also Grimsby have shown the way they, like us, have one of the lower budgets but are sat in the play offs having been well coached this season.
I've just listened to this and it's a really good, passionate discussion about the club and how we need to move forward with different views all being acknowledged. There are positives and negatives about this season but I think we all agree we need to progress next year, it's just how we do that. Keeping all the players is not the answer and neither is a complete overhaul. There are of course question marks over Flynn but I would be shocked if he's not in charge first game of the season so that's a mute point.Si Robin wrote: ↑24 Apr 2025, 19:11 Mark Halliwell

Tbh the only issue that I might have is that without additional investment ( and our most creative players leaving every season) is that we can't keep pulling rabbits out of hats every season and need a backup to prevent us sliding into NL. Dulson will hopefully get more game time when (if?) Archer, AJ-B and Thomas go and we need to overhaul the defence and replace the creativity that Archer/Thomas/AJ-B provide.
Quite a relaxed pod I thought - btw Si when I think of Barnet, I still think of Martin Allen and his actions that nearly sent us out of the League. After managing us, didn't he manage Barnet four times or something?Si Robin wrote: ↑02 May 2025, 15:01 Episode 138

I've been seeing this a lot, but is there anywhere in the public domain that confirms Downes is the "defence coach" or are we just assuming that because he was a defender he must be the defence coach. Lest we forget, in Michael Duff's final season in charge we conceded 80 goals - as he was one of the best defenders we've ever had at the club, do we assume he was in charge of coaching our defenders?asl wrote: ↑05 May 2025, 09:47 The competition for worst game and goal of the season will be fierce and I think I'll leave that until I get a short list!
Best game: I simply cannot think of a single game where we played two halves of noteworthy football. There were several where we played really well for 45 minutes - the last probably the second half v Notts County or the first half away v Swindon. I'd need reminding, but probably a pre-Christmas game including Colwill in the team where we did often look competent.
Takeaways for this season: we set ourselves up for mid-table by our sales and recruitment. The aim was quite clearly not to get relegated and that was achieved. So the biggest takeaway for me was catching the falling knife (in a way that Carlisle singularly failed). At a more granular level, our defending was truly dreadful for most of the season and I do wonder whether our defence coach/assistant manager is up to the job. Stubbs was part of that and yet was still my choice for PotS. Aside from our defending, we were heavily reliant on individual moments of brilliance from the likes of Archer, Thomas, AJB, Young - at least 75% of whom are likely to be sold - plus the excellent loanee Colwill, of course. However, at our level, if we want to progress, we need a solid, reliable and consistent foundation - and we simply do not have that. First thing first, we need to build and organise a defence - hopefully around Stubbs - that will not ship the same number of ridiculous goals that we conceded this season.
Unfortunately, I suspect that next season will likely be more of the same, hopefully edging closer to the play-offs.
Goes without saying Si - but thanks for all your organisational skills and hard work alongside Mark, Dan, Matt, JP and all the other different voices on the Pod this season. It's turned into a must-listen for me, listening to it's become part of my pre-match routine whether I'm watching live or on iFollowSi Robin wrote: ↑12 May 2025, 19:31 With apologies for the delay, it was recorded on Wednesday evening.
