Well, a win's a win... For the first 30 minutes, England played like their own hype - but then it all tailed off and, after 70 mins, half the team were blowing out of their arses.

What a player Jude Bellingham is...

it's knock out football, win learn and move on, far too much negativity regarding England.

modern football fans can £uck off.

Not impressed at all. They were hanging onto a 1-0 lead at the end. Typical Gareth Southgate tactics. Has he not learnt anything from Euros Final of three years ago? He was lucky to get away with it last night but against better teams, it won't work.

I don't understand why, every tournament, there's a player doing nothing in a game and Southgate doesn't take him off. Foden was anonymous, as he usually is when playing for England, and he played the full 90 when we had Eze and Palmer on the bench. Same with Kane really but he was winning long balls and free kicks late on at least and was only a good save from making it 2-0, and it takes a lot for the captain to be replaced.

Some of the criticism is constantly OTT and repetitive but GS doesn't help himself.

I read that Southgate blamed a lack of energy for the second half performance. If that were true, then why only make 3 subs and not 5. Another poor tactical call from him.

These celebrations for goals are going on far to long, no need for the subs, bench and bus driver to all be involved, its not as though they've scored the winner in the final is it?

I presume it's a tactic to take the sting out of the oppositions kick off and response.

Djogo Jota nearly had a fight with the Czech keeper last night trying to get the ball off him so that he could do his 'ball up shirt pretending to be pregnant' celebration - only for the goal to be ruled out by VAR a minute or so later. What a dick he looked...

Is it my imagination or has there been an inordinate number of own goals so far this tournament...? Another just now for Croatia. I think that's five, now, already.

Did you see that prat Ronaldo to the keeper too? Should be carded retrospectively for obscene gestures.

It's like watching us at the start of last season. But with goals at both ends.

Does anyone still think Southgate is the man for England?

A rant I just posted on Facebook:

Yet another turgid performance by England under Gareth Southgate... Harry Kane defending on the edge of his own penalty area; poor touches and loose passes all over the pich; Bellingham barely seeing the ball; no energy, no press, no urgency; no joined-up thinking. "Score a goal and sit back" appears to be the primary tactic, yet again. Dull as dishwater to watch (10 mins of the Spain v Italy game has already surpassed the earlier bore-draw) - despite the attacking talent England has.

Don't get me wrong, I like Jared Bowen and I'm glad he's in the squad. However, that's twice now he's come on as sub ahead of Cole Palmer and Anthony Gordon. On what planet is he a better option to come on when you're desperately looking for some creativity to score a goal????

The best attacking line-up in recorded history and he sets them up to play like that. It beggars belief, but he's been doing it for 8 years so we shouldn't be surprised.

Southgate is very, very similar to Wade Elliott, is he not? Quietly spoken, thoughtful, intelligent, articulate, likeable. But seemingly terrified of anything resembling positive football.

Yeah, they’re just opinions, but wacky? The view that England were turgid and defensive seems fairly mainstream to me tonight.

According to GS it's not his instructions for them to sit back on a 1-0 lead. To be fair, they were playing s#!t before the goal, which we got a bit lucky with, defender dawdling on the ball like he was an England player and then Walker taking far too long to pass to Kane, and the ball eventually reached him via two deflections.

Something's wrong somewhere, possibly just in the players minds, but the buck stops with the manager. If he's not telling them to play like that then he has to figure out WHY they are playing like that and free them up. But the general lethargy in yesterday's performance was startling, especially from Bellingham. He generally looked like he couldn't be bothered with the game and every time he went down he stayed on the floor for several seconds like he couldn't be arsed to get back up. None of them clicked though. I can only hope the players are saving themselves for the knockout games.

Also special mention for the pitch. Not using it as an excuse, same for both sides, although our players seemed to struggle with it more in terms of taking chunks up and going over on their ankles.

A friend of mine made a interesting comment regarding Bellingham that since moving to Real his 5hit housing, swagger and general whinging has gone through the roof, he watches a lot of European football so will take his word.

I believe you all have to learn to divorce what you see in the Premiership every Saturday from what a team picked of only England players, can do.
There is no logical reason to believe England should be able to run rings around or be allowed to play a game of their choosing, against any team which has reached a football competition finals.

I’ll reserve judgement until the knock-outs.

There’s an argument that doing the minimum possible in the group stages to qualify is beneficial. E.g. if we can get out of the group with 30% less running and less energy expended in each game, then come the knock-outs we have saved ourselves almost a full game’s worth of energy consumption and miles in the legs. This could provide a boost in the final couple of rounds.

I'm concerned at how tired we look after 70 minutes of 'conserving energy for the knockout stages'. Trippier was flat on his back gasping for air at the end of the Denmark game. Compare and contrast with the energy virtually every other team are expending during games, win or lose.

Just when you thought football couldn't possibly be any more tedious than when England play - here's Scotland to prove us wrong...

They never let you down, Scotland. Assuming you're expecting them to go out bottom of the group stage.

Scotland should have been awarded a penalty. I was amazed that it was never referred to VAR. They have been referred and given them for a lot less than that.

And yet I bet the officials get nowhere near as much stick as the officials did in the France-Netherlands game for ruling Netherlands' goal out, because they're not English.

The Dutch goal was a weird one... I'd have allowed it - but I completely see why it was ruled out. What got me is the way the offside Dutchman sheepishly walked away after the ball hit the net and didn't celebrate with his team-mates - I think he knew he was in the wrong place.

Agreed that the Jocks were robbed of a penalty - but they scarcely deserved it, anyway...

can and can't believe how bad they were/are, its not even (English) league one standard and they get given a champions league place  (probably down to the size and financial clout of celtic and rangers though)

regarding the pen can see why its not been given, he was looking for it (those get waived away almost every week in the lower leagues)

Game day 3. Oh, what I'd give for a decent performance and a fairly comfortable win going into the knockout stages.

It does show how far we've come since Southgate took over, though, when everyone is so pissed off at how bad we have been, but we have qualified for the next round with a game to go (albeit it's easier than ever to get out of the group stages).

Assuming we finish top of the group and begin to play, we have a much better side of the draw. Still depends on other results of course but it could be an underwhelming Italy (QF) and possibly defensively strong but not much up top Netherlands (SF) in it, with Spain, France, Portugal and Germany in the other side.

England v Germany final in Berlin, anyone? I'm sure there wouldn't be any trouble regarding songs about England marching into Berlin to finish them off.
